To put an end to bedroom clutter, you need a variety of smart storage solutions. These smart projects help you maximize your space and ensure that your clothing, books and décor all have a spot to call home.
1. Under-the-bed repurposed drawers
Spruce up a worn drawer by adding a colorful new front panel, and then add wheels to create a smart storage container that saves space and makes organizing easy.

Materials
- Drawer
- Medium-density fiberboard*
- Paint in color(s) of your choice
- Paintbrush
- 2 knobs
- Screwdriver
- Wood screws
- 4 rigid casters
*Measure the front of the drawer, and then take the measurements to your local home improvement store and have the fiberboard cut to size. For a finished look, get it cut 1 inch longer than the drawer on all sides.
Instructions
- Paint fiberboard, and then let dry completely. Once dry, attach knobs to the front side
- Turn the drawer over. Use a screwdriver to attach one caster to each corner
- Screw the finished fiberboard to the front of the drawer. For a clean look, screw it on from the inside of the drawer
Tip: If the drawer has a thin bottom, turn it over and use wood glue to secure a piece of 1-inch-wide wood along the width of the drawer. Then attach casters.
Tip: Hang an old drawer on a wall to create a cute shelf in seconds. For extra storage, install pieces of sturdy wood within the drawer to serve as shelves. Or line the back of the drawer with hooks and hang it by the front door to catch keys and knick-knacks.
2. Side “tables” with a storage option
Instead of opting for traditional side tables, use tall, thin bookshelves. This not only adds visual interest to your headboards but also opens up more space for storing and displaying smaller items.
Tip: Fill the space above your headboard and between the side table shelves with a long traditional shelf for even more decorative storage.
3. A tidy closet
Effectively storing clothes by season frees up space in your closet. Keep off-season clothing in clear plastic bins so you can easily see what's inside, and store the bins elsewhere until you need them.
Prefabricated closet shelving, either made of wood or coated wire, can give you additional storage options for folded sweaters, jeans, shoes and more – or you can repurpose a small bookcase or chest of drawers placed below the closet rod.
