Imagine the Possibilities
Crafting your own decorative wreath is simply a matter of choosing an inspired theme. Once you do, complete your wreath from start to finish by following our four quick and easy steps:
Step 1 — Get Inspired: From a swatch of fabric to a favorite photo, inspiration can come from just about anywhere. This month, let the little moments of creativity come to life in handmade wreaths, both big and small. Can’t decide on a theme? Take a cue from any of our three ideas to get started.
- Modern Monochromatic: A single color makes a big statement and is easy to achieve. Choose one color—pale green, for instance—for your wreath embellishments, or achieve an equally stunning look by covering the entire finished piece with spray paint in a single hue. Try whatever colors match your décor or holiday theme—while greens, browns, oranges and reds lend a more natural look, white, gold, silver and icy blue can make for a lovely holiday palette.
- All in the Family: A wreath can be used to symbolize the everlasting family bond. Use your wreath project as an opportunity to show off your family’s personality for holiday guests. Pick up an assortment of very small frames at your local craft store, then place your favorite shots of each family member inside. Choose one slightly larger frame for a group shot that will be placed at the top or bottom center to anchor the wreath arrangement. Attach small frames around the wreath with floral wire, then fill in gaps with greenery or faux berries.
Tip: If displaying your wreath outside, make sure you’re using weather-resistant picture frames.

- Fanciful Feathers: Feathers are all the rage in decorating and can give a simple grapevine wreath a soft, cozy feel. Go natural with neutral tones (think browns, tans and creams) or try vibrant colors to fit your décor or holiday theme of choice. Look for a wide assortment of feathers in all shapes, sizes and colors at your local craft or fabric store.
Step 2 — Gather Supplies: Once you’ve decided on a theme, hunt around your home and in the backyard for free-of-charge items that will fit into your decorative theme. Then, visit your florist or craft store to purchase additional embellishments.
Tip: Remember to think outside the box—if you’re working in the monochromatic vein, consider quirky odds and ends like mismatched buttons, beads, even old pieces of silverware, scraps of fabric or costume jewelry. When arranged and spray painted, their uniform color will naturally pull everything together. While there, also buy a wreath base. There are many to choose from—grapevine, straw, wire and Styrofoam, among others. We worked with a grapevine base for its organic look and versatility. Finally, remember to pick up some floral wire or use a hot glue gun to fasten your decorative items in place.

Spice up a wreath centerpiece arrangement even more by adding festive fragrance to the look with a Febreze® Home Collection Flameless Luminary™ positioned in the center. It features a welcoming, flameless glow and many decorative scented shade designs to choose from. This time of year, look for seasonal scents like Vanilla Frost. Step 3 — Assemble & Arrange: Before fastening pieces in place on the wreath base, lay your embellishments out on a work surface, then begin piecing them together in a circular shape roughly the same size as your base. This allows you to create a composition you love before fastening things permanently in place, so you don’t have to worry about making it perfect on the first try!
Tip: Using floral wire instead of hot glue allows you to remove and reposition items as you like. However, a small amount of hot glue will help bulkier items stay put.
Step 4 — Hang & Admire: Create a small loop of hanging wire at the top of the wreath on the back, then mount on a sturdy nail, picture frame hanger or over-the-door hanger. Traditionally, decorative wreaths make a festive statement outdoors on lampposts, fences and doors. But this season, try bringing these custom pieces inside to hang in any room of your home.
Tip: Consider crafting smaller versions that you can use as stylish candle rings or table centerpieces for your next holiday meal.
This holiday season, let your imagination lead the way and craft one-of-a-kind wreaths, perfect for decorating your home, indoors and out.
