Traditionally, a mud room is a place to take off dirty outdoor gear before heading inside. With our version, you get the same perks without spending a fortune or taking up an entire room. Learn about the three essential parts, then find tips for making them yourself.

Mini Closet
From coats to umbrellas, keep outdoor gear neat with a mini closet:
    • Repurpose an old bookcase into a hanging rack. If you don’t already own one, look for deals at your local thrift store or flea market.
    • Renovate your bookcase, then turn it on its side so the shelves are vertical. Install a few large and small hooks for hanging items.
    • Add a decorative touch with crown molding. Paint or stain it the same color as your bookcase, then screw it to the top of your new closet.
Tip: An open design helps wet gear dry quicker, so there’s no need to install doors.

Storage Unit
Keep seasonal items and everyday goods within reach:
    • Use an old set of drawers or small dresser to build an organizing station. For a finished look, paint or stain it the same color as your mini closet.
    • Adhere rubber stops (available at your local home improvement store) to the bottom of the unit to protect the floor underneath.
    • Fill your drawers! Put everyday items like dog leashes or keys in the top drawer so they’re always within reach.
Small Bench
A small seat is the perfect place to take off your dirty shoes:
    • Paint or stain a 3-4’ piece of sturdy wood to match your mini closet and storage unit. Or keep it simple by using a pre-cut stair tread.
    • Position your bench in between the mini closet and storage unit to turn your mudroom into one connected piece of furniture.
    • Test your seat before letting family members sit on it. Top it with a stack of heavy books—if it seems unsteady, consider using a thicker piece of wood or longer screws.
Tip: Keep clean-up to a minimum by using wood mats to create a walkway from your mudroom to the nearest door. To protect the floor underneath the mats, attach weather stripping to the bottom.
