Teach children the value of organizing, and finally reduce the clutter of each day’s deserted toys. Just select your favorites from our simple toy organizing ideas, then enjoy a tidiness turn-around by having kids help put them into practice.

Repurposed Toy Organizers

Boxes: Cover tissue or packaging boxes with contact paper, then attach two thick strips of hook and loop tape to one side of each box, running them parallel to one another. With the complementary side of the hook and loop tape adhered to a wall, reused boxes become detachable toy storage.

Tote Bags: Mount a series of hooks in a row or column, hanging a tote or reusable grocery bag from each. Follow our fabric painting basics to label each bag. Kids can then easily grab the right tote for collecting stranded toys.

Crates: Attach wheels to the base of repurposed crates, providing kids an on-the-go toy box. To keep crates from also becoming clutter, clearly outline their home on your floor with colorful tape.

Ideas for Organizing Toys

Wire Baskets: Rest wire baskets against a wall, securing them in place with screws. You can also try hanging baskets from hooks that attach to the wall via a removable adhesive. Aside from ordinary baskets, wire wall planters also work great. To label, try adding DIY wall decals above each container.

Organizing by Toy Types

Toy Cars: Adhere strong, circular magnets in a grid-pattern to a fabric-covered board you can mount to a wall. When kids are done playing, they’ll simply set a metal car on each magnet! Optionally, you can cover each magnet with a thin layer of fabric to prevent cars from getting scratched.

Dolls, Figurines & Stuffed Animals: Treat these toys the way kids would—as if they’re truly alive. Try an idea from our Caring for a New Pet article: Line a vintage suitcase with blankets, creating a faux bed where toys can rest (and stay organized, too).

Craft Supplies: Go to town as you organize crafty odds and ends by putting our craft area storage tips to the test. Or, if you’re light on crafts and heavier on school supplies, consult our Homework Station How-To.

Blocks: Situate a row or two of floating shelves on a wall, setting plastic bins on each shelf for different blocks. Sort by color, shape or size.
