    Headboards instantly pull together the look of bedrooms, plus they’re the perfect place to create extra storage space. Begin with three bookcases that have seen better days, transform them with paint and upholstery, then connect them to create something sophisticated.

Materials
Large narrow bookcase*
2 small bookcases (with identical heights)*
Sandpaper
Spray primer
Paint or stain, color(s) of your choice
Paintbrush
1/4" thick plywood**
Fabric or faux leather, enough to cover plywood
Foam, same size as plywood
Staple gun
Scissors
Screwdriver
Screws

*Tip: When buying bookcases, look for one narrow bookcase that’s taller than your bed is wide. Make sure you’ll have a few extra inches between the smaller bookcases (they’ll go under the top and bottom of the bookcase for support) and your bed.

**Tip: Measure the inside of your large bookcase, then visit your local home improvement store or wood shop and ask the experts to cut your plywood to size.


Instructions
  1. Remove shelves from the large bookcase. Sand, prime and paint or stain it, along with both smaller bookcases. Let dry completely.
  2. Upholster the plywood: Lay faux leather or fabric pattern-side down on a clean, flat work surface. Top with foam, then plywood. Wrap fabric around the foam and plywood, pull taut and use a staple gun to secure. Repeat until covered, then trim off excess fabric.   3. Lay the large bookcase on its side. Place one small bookcase under each end so that the shelves face out (for storage). Screw the bookcases together.
  4. Working from behind the bookcase, screw the upholstered plywood panel inside the large bookcase.
