You don't need to be Picasso to add some style to your room if you use stencils. It's fun, it's inexpensive, and it's quick. Tissue paper technique is another easy painting procedure you can use alone or with stencils for dramatic textured walls. Learn these easy painting methods from our featured decorating expert, Karen Powell.
Karen brings her Fine Arts background, over 3 years' experience painting professionally with her partner, and her love of decorative painting to make your home look great—simply.
Stencils
Stencils are available in a variety of designs. You can use them to create the look of hand-painted borders around your room, but you can also use them to create wall designs in more random patterns that are all your own.
You'll need (these items are available at craft stores):
Begin with a smooth painted surface (or see below for a textured surface).
Insider's Tricks
Design Projection To make a truly bold statement, follow the “bigger is better” design philosophy. Here, projecting a simple design onto a wall with a flashlight makes it easy to achieve a clean, proportionate, larger than life design.
You'll need:
Lace Technique This technique takes advantage of the intricate designs of lace to add beautiful patterns to existing decorative pieces or walls. Use it on vases, lamps, frames and other décor pieces to add a special touch to any room.
Tip: Just like when you use stencils, applying the right amount of spray paint is key. Apply small amounts of paint and reapply in layers to avoid smearing.
Tissue Paper Technique Tissue paper technique is an easy way to add texture to your walls; however, it is rather permanent. Of course, you can always paint over it, but the texture will remain.
A Variation If you don't wish to glaze, you could also use a colored wall paint to apply the tissue.
A Hint You might want to practice your technique on plain white poster board.
