Playrooms can mean a room where there are a bunch of toys on the floor. Or it can be a room that literally is a toy! It’s easy to add some decorating accents on the walls of a playroom that can double as activity centers for your little ones to play and learn.

The following ideas for playroom walls will help create a room where the kids can let their imagination run wild. Even if you don’t have a room specifically for children to play in, these wall decorations can be used in bedrooms, basements and informal living rooms.

Decoration Buttons

These hanging wall decorations give your kids a colorful way to do their own decorating. Children can create their own fabric decorations, like fabric flowers, ribbons and lace, and attach hook-and-loop fasteners onto them. You can also put hook-and-loop fasteners on the back of pictures, postcards and photographs so your children can add their own images to their walls.

It’s great to create a few of these buttons in different colors of fleece. Your kids will have plenty of room to add their hook-and-loop fasteners decorations, not to mention plenty of color in their rooms.

MATERIALS
Inexpensive, small circular tabletop
Fleece
Hook-and-loop fastener tape
Decorative fabrics like lace, fabric flowers and ribbons
Hammer and nails
Stapler
Photographs, pictures and postcards

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Wrap a piece of fleece tightly around the circular tabletop. Attach it to the tabletop using the staples.
  2. The easiest way to attach the buttons to the wall is to hammer two nails straight through the tabletop and fleece and into the wall. Depending on the thickness of the tabletop, you may want to pre-drill holes into it before you nail it to the wall. If it’s heavy, nail it into the studs in the wall.
  3. Let your children attach the hook-and-loop fasteners tape to your decorative fabrics and your images. They’re now ready to start decorating their room on their own.

Kite Wall Art

This wall art project brings breezy spring days into any room. Use fabric to either coordinate with existing design in your child’s playroom or make it stand out in the background.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Put plain white flour and water into a bowl and mix until a smooth paste is made.*
  2. Cover the big ball with paste and strips of tissue paper or newspaper. Repeat this process to create several layers over the ball.
  3. After drying, hot glue a rope around the ball and tie on or attach to the basket.

* Tip: The amount of flour and water used to create paste for paper mache projects is up to you depending on how much paste you will need for your project. The paste should be used soon after created and shouldn’t be too thick or too drippy.

A Chalkboard—Right on the Wall

It seems like every child wants to draw on the wall at one time or another. So why not let them?

Paint a section of the wall with chalkboard paint, an acrylic paint that is durable and washable. When painted on a wall, it mimics a normal chalkboard, allowing your children to draw to their hearts’ content. After painting the wall, finish the look with a chair rail that can double as a chalk and eraser holder.

Interior Decorating That’s Ready For Fun

Other ideas to excite your children’s imagination and burn up some of their energy include:

  • Replacing a carpet with an exercise mat to prevent skinned knees. Not only that, but it’s easier to wipe up spills off a mat than a carpet.
  • Install a mirror so they can check out their dance moves as they rock out to some tunes from Julie’s Jukebox.
  • Make it easy for your kids to get to their toys—and to put them away. Lower the shelves and cabinets so your little ones don’t have to stretch.
  • Try creating a theme room based on your child’s favorite interests. Have fun with it and let your imagination go wild. For instance, if your kids love firefighters, hang a ladder horizontally on the wall to create shelves or hang hubcaps on the wall and use red paint to create a fire truck look.

As you’re creating the walls of your children’s playroom, allow them to make some decisions so they get a real feeling of ownership of the room. And also keep in mind that kids grow up, so you’ll want to choose decorations that can be easily changed.
