To add a burst of color to any room without breaking your budget, make a set of cornices—or decorative boxes that hang above the window. Just follow our simple step-by-step instructions to get started, then give them a personalized paint job.

How to Make a Cornice

Materials
Stretcher frame*
Pre-primed canvas, 5” wider than your stretcher frame
Staple gun
Small paint roller
Paint, color of your choice
Accent paint, color(s) of your choice
Mounting hardware

*Tip: A stretcher frame is an unfinished hardwood frame used to stretch artist canvases. When choosing yours, keep in mind the size of your window. As a general rule, it should measure a little wider than the window and be 1’ high or under. For a classic look, choose a shorter frame. To make a bold statement, opt for a taller one.

Instructions
    1. Lay canvas primed-side down on a flat, clean work surface, then top with stretcher frame.
    2. One section at a time, wrap the canvas around the frame, pulling tautly and staple it to the back. After the entire frame is wrapped, flip it over.
    3. With a roller, paint the front and sides of the canvas, then let dry completely.
    4. Add detail, like stripes or flourishes, with paint. See below for a few inspiring ideas. When finished, mount your cornice with the appropriate hardware.
Painting Ideas

    • Stripes: Use painter’s tape to create vertical or horizontal stripes. For an elegant look, paint thin vertical stripes in one color or shades of the same color. To create an eye-catching accent piece, try wide stripes in two hues, like emerald and copper.
    • Gingham: Crisscross your tape to create a playful checkered pattern. Achieve a classic look in your kitchen with bright red gingham cornices. Or adorn bathroom windows with soft yellow treatments.
    • Flourishes: Stencil on nature-inspired images, like vines of ivy or bold blooms. Or add a delicate touch with our lace-painting technique.
