Give your dining room an elegant, polished look by hanging chair rail trim around the perimeter—it perks up the space and helps protect your walls! Start by painting the walls one color or two complementary hues, then follow our easy step-by-step instructions to hang chair rail for a finished, professional feel.

Materials
Pre-painted chair rail*, color of your choice
Pencil
Tape measure
Level
Hammer
Finishing nails
Nail set
Wood putty
Caulk
Sandpaper

*Tip: Measure the perimeter of your room, then visit your local home improvement store and buy enough pieces of chair rail to go around the entire room. While you’re there, ask the experts to miter the corner pieces for you—it simplifies hanging them later.

Instructions
  1. Walk the perimeter of the room with a pencil, tape measure and level, drawing an even, continuous line at the height you want your chair rail.
  2. Slightly hammer nails into the chair rail before placing on wall. Double check that it’s level, then nail up the rail. Sink the nails with a nail set, tapping gently until they’re at least flush with the wood.
  3. Fill in the nail holes with wood putty and apply caulking to any gaps between the pieces of chair rail. Let dry, then gently sand off excess putty.
