Whether you’re classic, contemporary or somewhere in between, you can make sense of mismatched décor when you take a white paintbrush to your accent items. Crisp, clean and neutral, we think it’s beautiful in both big batches and small, understated doses.

Two Ways to Paint
You can coat your items in white with two different, equally easy techniques:
  • Paintbrush: For large, relatively flat items like big picture frames and furniture pieces, purchase a can of interior latex paint and apply two to three coats with a paintbrush. Prime first if the piece is very dark in color.
  • Spray paint: Eclectic knick-knacks and intricate frames feature lots of nooks and crannies, making spray paint the perfect tool for achieving an even coat. Lay items on a flat work surface lined with newspaper in a well-ventilated area (or outdoors), then spray and let dry. Apply a second coat if needed.
What to Paint

white effect framesDecorative Accents: Visit a flea market or garage sale, or browse what you already have, picking out lots of different décor pieces that feature interesting shapes and textures. Once you paint them white, your mismatched items will feel like they belong side-by-side on a wall, mantle or shelf. Look for pieces like:
  • Candlesticks
  • Ceramics
  • Vases
  • Storage bins & baskets
  • Lamp bases
  • Knick-knacks
  • Frames
Tip: Using white is especially clean and uplifting in small spaces like a bathroom. Look for vintage soap dishes and toothbrush holders to coat in white. You can even encase a mirror in a decorative white frame to create a one-of-a-kind vanity!

Bring together frames of various shapes, sizes and styles, then paint them white to create a collection that can stand on its own or display your favorite artwork.

Furniture: If you’re trying to make clashing pieces of furniture work together in your space, considering painting them bright white for a look that’s modern yet classic. Try it with:
  • End tables
  • Coffee tables
  • Bookshelves
  • Wooden benches
  • Armoires
  • Barstools
  • Chairs
Tip: We love the look of taking lots of mismatched chairs, painting them white and placing them around the kitchen table. To add texture, paint chairs in a few different shades like bright white, eggshell and cream.
