Bookshelf Nightstand

Find out just how easy it is to transform an old bookshelf into a functional, decorative nightstand in just a few simple steps.

Bookshelf Nightstand

MATERIALS
1 tall bookshelf
Screw gun
Measuring tape
Speed square
Pencil
Safety goggles
Skill saw
2” screws
Electric drill
Wood glue
Paint, color(s) of your choice
Paintbrush
Rag
220-grit sandpaper

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Unscrew legs from the bottom of the bookshelf, then remove the bottom frame by pulling it away from the dowel pins. Set the dowel pins and other pieces aside.
2. From the top of the bookshelf, measure down 25” and mark it on all four sides.
3. With the speed square, draw a horizontal straight line around the bookshelf, using the marks you just made as a guide.
4. Put on safety goggles, and slowly cut along the line with the skill saw to create two separate pieces.
5. Measure the placement of the dowel holes on the bottom of the bookshelf, and with a pencil, mark those same measurements on the bottom of the top piece that you just sawed off. Pre-drill the pencil marks, then re-attach the original dowel pins into the separated top piece. Apply wood glue around the edges, then re-attach the original bottom square frame and the legs.*
6. Sand the piece, then dust thoroughly with a rag.
7. Apply three coats of paint and let dry completely.

*Tip: You can discard the bottom piece of the bookshelf, or use the scraps for a reclaimed lumber wall.
