Once you have kids, most of your New Year’s Eves seem to involve putting the children to bed early and kicking back until the clock strikes midnight. As they get older, try to incorporate some of these terrific ideas for New Year’s Eve with kids.

New Year’s Tradition Ideas for Babies

  • Game Night: Set up a portable crib so friends with babies can bring them over. Put the little ones to bed and stay up as late as you can while eating chocolate fondue and playing games.
  • Photo Shoot: Surround your bundle of joy with props from your own celebration, like streamers and party masks. Then snap a picture to commemorate just how little this person is and imagine all the wonderful years ahead.

Quick Tip

Febreze® Surround your guests–and yourself–with the spirit of the season with Febreze® NOTICEables™, a scented oil warmer that you simply plug into any outlet. It helps eliminate odors from the air and comes in festive scents like Glistening Alpine, Cranberries & Front and Winter Magic & Glow.

New Year’s Tradition Ideas for Toddlers & Preschoolers

  • International Celebration: Why not ring in New Year’s at noon rather than midnight? Enjoy the celebrations and fireworks in other parts of the world on TV and head to bed early.
  • Cook Lucky Foods: Black-eyed peas, lentils, noodles and pomegranates are traditional New Year’s Eve foods believed to bring good luck in the coming year.
  • Movie Night: Get in your jammies early for a kid-friendly movie, homemade pizza and sparkling apple or grape juice. Pass out the party poppers whenever you decide it’s “midnight.”

New Year’s Tradition Ideas for Grade Schoolers, Tweens & Beyond

  • Skip Bedtime: Set aside the rules and let kids stay up all night. What’s the worst thing that could happen? And at least they don’t have school the next day.
  • Special Meal: Use special dishes one more time before the holidays are over. Leverage any twinkling lights for ambiance and serve bite-sized desserts.
  • Time Capsule: Fill a time capsule with devices, news and music from the year that is ending. Bury it in the yard or hide it away for future rediscovery.
  • Sing-a-Long: Call friends and family around the country to reflect on the past year and sing the traditional Scottish New Year’s song “Auld Lang Syne” together to ring in the new year. Start around 9pm for East Coasters and finish around 1am for West Coasters.
  • Predictions: Create a predictions notebook and exchange ideas about where you’ll be in one, five and ten years.
