Making this birdfeeder with your children is a great way to spend time together.
  1. Wash out the milk carton.

  2. Where the carton was opened for pouring, tape it shut.

  3. Poke a hole through the center of the top sealed edge of the carton with a pencil.

  4. With scissors, cut two rectangular flaps on opposite sides of the carton (each flap should be about 2 inches up from the bottom of the carton).

  5. Open up the flaps.

  6. Use the pencil to poke a small hole near the bottom edge of each of the two flaps.

  7. Tie a piece of string through the hole in one of the flaps, thread it through the hole in the top sealed edge of the carton, and tie off the string with the hole in the other flap (so the flaps remain open). The flaps will serve as awnings to keep rain out of the bird seed.

  8. Use the pencil to poke two holes centered below each flap and flush with the bottom of the carton.

  9. Push the twig or dowel rod through the two holes. This will serve as a perch for the birds.

  10. Punch several tiny holes in the bottom of the carton for drainage.

  11. Pour birdfeed into the carton until it reaches the top of the opening.

  12. Tie a long string from the hole in the top sealed edge of the carton and hang your birdfeeder from a nearby tree branch.

  13. Watch the birds enjoy their new feeding place!
