Creating Your Journals
First, you’ll prepare your journals for a nature excursion. This is a great activity for your family. Start by gathering book formats that make sense for each personality. For the artist in the family, try a sketchpad. For a poet or scientific type, try a lined notebook or graph pad.
Your books will be a reflection of how you each see the world, so tailor them to feel like original creations by you. Customize covers with simple embellishments or recover them altogether. For example, you can emboss your initials on a leather bound journal or, for a sketchpad, cover it with fabric or decoupage images.
If you like, you can create sections inside. Each person can include the sections that interest him or her. Here some ideas to get you started:
Tip: Nature journals are a thoughtful gift idea for a nature lover in your life. Customizing gives it a personal touch that shows how well you know your loved one. You can even fill the first few pages as inspiration!
Packing For Your Outing
Prepare with a backpack or easy-to-carry bag for all your journals. Consider including the following items to help capture the beauty you’ll experience:
Now simply choose an outdoor destination where you can picnic, hike or just take a stroll and you’re ready to soak in the inspiration. For more hiking ideas, read Friendship Hike and Picnic.
Hike & Record
It’s time to explore! Free your mind. Take in the amazing nature around you and begin to let your journal take shape. Will it be a log where a little boy can chronicle outdoor adventures with his dog? Or a place where a little girl can press flowers and write make believe stories?
Here are some ideas for how to start shaping the contents of your journals and spend meaningful time together as you wander through the woods:
Back at Home
Later that day, take time to research online, complete unfinished passages and print digital photos to include. Make sure to record the date of your outing. That evening, trade journals and see how differently one family member sees the world from another. Continue adding to your journals all summer long and soon, you’ll have an imaginative collection of family heirlooms.

Choose a name or a phrase that has some significance, and create the letters out of natures materials to be photographed. For example, if you chose the word Joy you would look around your yard for sticks, plants, materials, that take the shape of each of the letters (a branch in the shape of a J + a tree stump for an O and possibly a blade of grass for the Y). With your digital camera, shoot each letter separately, print and frame. Hang the individual frames together to form the word or name. Its a simple concept and a great conversation piece to have around.
