Handmade Pinecones

Craft your own pinecones from felt or fabric. Download our template and follow the step-by-step instructions to make them, then try our suggestions for displaying and using these festive beauties.

Handmade Pinecones

Materials
Foil
Fabric*

Sharp scissors
Hot glue gun

*Tip: Use wool, corduroy, felt, foam crafting sheets, or repurpose fabric from an old sweater or shirt. You can use all one color, or alternate with different colors.

**Tip: Our template was created with an average-sized pinecone in mind, about 4” tall and 2” wide at the base, and it fits roughly in the palm of our hand. Feel free to alter the size of the template by changing the scale in your print window.

Instructions

Mold aluminum foil into an egg shape (the rounded end will be where the stem attaches). The size of the foil egg depends on how big you’d like the pinecone to be.
Download and print our template, then cut out the three pinecone pieces.
Using double-sided tape or pins, attach the template pieces to your fabric and cut out the shapes. You’ll only need one of each of the first and last pieces on the template, but the scales (middle template piece) depend on how big you make the foil egg shape. Cut a bunch at first, then clip as you go.
Pinch the three flaps of the first piece together with your fingers and add a dab of glue to the bottom of the fabric. Attach it to the pointed end of the foil cone.
Starting just slightly below that piece, begin gluing the scales around the foil egg, tightly overlapping and staggering the rows as you go. Feel free to alternate colors or fabrics.
When the entire shape is covered, dab a little glue to the third template piece and attach to the rounded end of the foil egg.
Take an extra piece of fabric, and roll it into a cone shape, then dab glue around the widest part. Attach it to the rounded end of the pinecone to create the stem.

Tie them to holiday packages or hostess gifts for a creative adornment.
Attach them to a seasonal wreath or garland.
Hang a bundle from a doorknob and create a warm welcome for your guests.
Stack a few in a bowl for a simple, festive centerpiece.
Glue a pin back (available at your local craft store) to one of the scales and make a crafty accessory or gift.
Make one for each of your holiday guests, attach a nametag, and you’ll have clever place cards!
Tie a bundle to a dowel rod or plant stake and stick it in the soil of your houseplant to liven up the pot.
