From art supplies to shoes, baskets are the perfect way to organize just about anything. To give them a decorative touch, follow our easy step-by-step instructions to make liners out of your favorite fabric.

Materials
Sewing machine
Basket
Washable fabric, about 2-3 yards*
Measuring tape
Scissors
Sewing pins
Ruler
Fabric chalk, pencil or marker
Elastic, 1/4" thickness
Safety pin
Needle
Thread

*Tip: Buy more fabric than you think you’ll need in case you make a mistake. If nothing else, you’ll have extra scraps for future craft projects like fabric wall art.

Instructions
    1. Measure basket’s outside circumference, then add 2” to the number. Next, measure from the center of one long side of the basket (or any side of a square basket), across the bottom and to the other side (no need to measure over the basket opening), then divide this number by 2 and add 4”. Use scissors to cut your fabric based on these measurements.
    2. Lay fabric pattern-side up on a clean, flat work surface. Fold it in half long ways, pin the long ends and sew them together with a 1/2" seam allowance. Next, pin together one set of short ends, then sew with 1/2" seam allowance.
    3. Measure the bottom width of the basket. Lay the bag flat on your work surface so one of the corners points away from you, then smooth out the sides to form a triangle—you’ll know you did it right if the seam of the bag runs up the center of the triangle. Place a ruler parallel to the tip of the triangle and draw a line with fabric chalk, pencil or marker where the ruler reads the width measurement you took. Pin along this line, then sew. Repeat with the other corner, then trim off the points, leaving 1/2" of excess fabric. Turn the liner right-side out.
    4. Measure elastic tightly around the top perimeter of the basket, then cut to size. Fold down the top of your liner 1/2", iron, fold down another 1/2", iron again, then pin. Sew down this channel, leaving an inch between the place you started and the place you stop. Attach a safety pin to the end of the elastic, then thread it threw the channel you just sewed. Hand sew the ends of elastic together.
    5. To finish, put your liner on the basket, wrapping the fabric over the top edges to secure.
Tip: To avoid your needle catching, iron fabric before you start sewing.
