    Everyone loves the classics—checkers, hopscotch, tic-tac-toe. Whether you’re hanging out in the den or headed out to the park for a picnic, you can strike up a game in an instant with our portable, extra-large playing boards. Get started with these simple no-sew ideas.

MATERIALS
Large blanket or sheet-size bath towel
Yardstick
Fabric marker
Ruler
Fabric or felt, equal in size to your blanket, colors and patterns of your choice
Scissors
Fusible web
Iron

INSTRUCTIONS
    1. Use your yardstick to measure a large square in the center of your blanket or towel, leaving at least a 2” border on each side.
    2. Divide the length of each side of your square by 8, then mark the increments along each edge with fabric marker. Use your yardstick to extend the lines across the board, creating a grid of 64 boxes.
    3. Lay out your fabric or felt. Follow your package instructions to apply the fusible web to the backside of the material.
    4. Use your fabric marker and ruler to draw 32 small squares on the fabric or felt, equal in size to the boxes on your blanket. Cut out the squares with scissors.
    5. Lay your fabric pieces on every other box in the grid. Follow your package instructions to activate the fusible web and adhere your pieces to the blanket.
    6. Let cool as recommended, then use small toys, seashells, stones or buttons as game pieces to play. You’ll need 16 pieces total.
Tip: Use your game blanket to play chess, too! Collect items in different colors or shapes to distinguish game pieces like King, Queen, Bishop and Pawn. Or, use the game pieces from a chess set.

Tic-Tac-Toe Board
Using the same materials, cut your fabric or felt into two sets of long, thin strips, one set slightly shorter than the width of your blanket or towel and the other set slightly shorter than the length. Space the strips out evenly on your blanket or towel to create a tic-tac-toe grid, then adhere with fusible web.

Tip: Use leftover felt to create three large “X” shapes and three large “O” shapes. Or, make it extra personal by creating game pieces in the shapes of your kids’ initials!

Hopscotch Board
Rainy days can put a damper on chalk games like hopscotch in the driveway. But with your same materials and basic technique, you can create a hopscotch board that can go just about anywhere:
  • Use long, thin strips to create boxes in the shapes of your choice, then create number pieces with felt.
  • Instead of marbles or stones, use softer items like beanbags for tossing.
  • Remember to play barefoot or in socks!
Tip: Instead of fabric or felt scraps, try creating your tic-tac-toe and hopscotch boards freehand with easy-to-use fabric paint.
