Spring cleaning may get all the attention, but fall is the perfect opportunity to get your home into tip-top shape. Before blustery winter winds arrive, take advantage of the weather, open the windows and follow our guide to a refreshed home.

Fall Cleaning Guide

Take advantage of the cool, crisp breeze and tackle these 10 hotspots before winter arrives:

  1. Windows. Take window screens outside and give them a good spray with the hose. While they’re drying, clean all the windows in your home.

Tip: Windows aren’t the only places that accumulate summer dust and dirt. Take this opportunity to clean your window treatments, too.

  1. Dishwasher. Run an empty cycle with a cup of vinegar or baking soda to eliminate odors and keep dishes sparkling.

Tip: Get the most out of each dishwashing cycle! Try our dishwasher loading tips and use a dishwasher magnet to let your household know when dishes are clean or dirty.

  1. Pantry. Pull everything out, sweep to remove crumbs, and toss expired food. Consider adding baskets, cake stands or a Lazy Susan to organize your shelves.

  1. Refrigerator. Pull everything out and toss old food, then use a sponge and dishwashing liquid to wipe the shelves and drawers.

Tip: Don’t forget to clean out the drip pan at the bottom of the fridge since mold can begin to accumulate after time.

  1. Sink & Shower. Refresh the bathroom with a thorough scrub to remove soap scum and mildew. Open the windows, spray dirty areas, then return a few minutes later to finish the job.

Tip: Organize hair accessories and other sink clutter with our 10 handy suggestions.

  1. Medicine Cabinet. The common cause of a messy medicine cabinet is overstuffing. Remove everything, even the shelves, and thoroughly wipe the inside and exterior, then organize.

Tip: Look for expiration dates on the bottom of bottles, then use the empties to make a seed storing kit for your garden!

  1. Blankets & Rugs. Take advantage of the breeze and hang blankets, comforters and throw pillows outdoors. Vacuum rugs, hang over a porch rail and beat with a broom, or toss machine-washable versions in the washer.

  1. Chandeliers & Fans. Don’t overlook these hanging dust magnets. Dust the blades and grooves, then sweep or vacuum the floor below to pick up flyaway dust bunnies.

  1. Garage. Remove built-up dirt with a good sweep, then rinse with the hose. While you’re there, rinse and pack up the garden tools and camping gear that’s finished for the season.

Tip: Be sure to keep the garage door open until everything has dried.

  1. Outdoor Areas. Clean and store patio furniture. Drain garden hoses, remove debris from the gutters and clean the grill. Also, check that weather stripping and caulking around doors and windows is intact.

Tip: Have extra time for cleaning and organizing? Now’s the perfect time to get your shed in order, too.
