Electronics are magnets for dust and dirt. With our cleaning tips, you’ll know exactly how and when to tidy them up, which will help keep them functioning in tip-top shape.

Electronics Cleaning Tips

Begin by unplugging and turning your electronic device off, then get cleaning instructions below:

Cell Phones, MP3 Players & Cameras

  • Wipe screens and control pads with a soft cloth dampened with a little water.
  • Clean crevices with a small paintbrush or cotton swab.
  • Remove detachable pieces from ear buds and headphones, and wash with water and dishwashing liquid.

Tip: Organize your electronics in simple, unique ways with our gadget organization tips.

Televisions

  • Clean glass television screens with glass cleaner and paper towels.
  • Wipe flat-screen televisions gently in horizontal motions with a dry microfiber cloth (avoid using tissues, toilet paper, paper towels or rough fabrics).
  • Use a multi-purpose cleaner to wipe the outer casing of the television and remotes.

Tip: When cleaning flat screen televisions, never press on the screen or attempt to scrub it. For stubborn spots, dab a little distilled water on the cloth then re-wipe.

Computers

  • Wipe the screen with a microfiber or computer cleaning cloth.
  • Turn the keyboard and mouse upside-down over a trashcan and remove dust and particles with a can of compressed air. Wipe both with a soft damp cloth.
  • Clean speaker holes, vents, ports, cable jacks and other crevices with a cotton swab dipped in a little rubbing alcohol.

Tip: Place electronics away from air conditioning units. The heat they generate can make the units run less efficiently. Find more hints in our Energy and Money-Saving Tips article.
