Perched beside a bookshelf or in a child’s nursery, a book-inspired table sets the reading mood. Find deals on used hardcover books at your local flea market or thrift store, then follow our step-by-step instructions to create your very own table with them.

Materials
20-25 hardcover books, all about the same size
Ruler
Pencil
2 milk crates
Drill
2 nuts
24” threaded steel rod
Hot glue gun
2 wood plaques (1 to use as base, 1 to use as tabletop)
Screwdriver
Screws
Wood putty
Sandpaper
Paint, color(s) of your choice
Paintbrush

Instructions
    1. Mark the center of your books. To find them, position a ruler from one corner of a book to the opposite corner, then lightly draw a line with a pencil. Do the same for the other 2 corners. The middle of the “X” is the center.
    2. Create a drilling station with 2 milk crates. Place them a few inches apart, then lay one book over the gap and drill a hole through the center of it. Repeat for remaining books, leaving 2 un-drilled.
    3. Drill the 2 leftover books. Measure the height of the nut you’re using, then use a larger drill bit to drill a hole large enough for the nut, stopping half way through the book. Repeat with second book, then replace the large bit with a smaller one and finish drilling through the books.
    4. Screw a nut onto one end of the steel rod. Thread one specially drilled book onto the rod so the nut fits snugly into the drilled hole. Apply a layer of hot glue, then thread a regularly-drilled book on top and press to adhere. Repeat with remaining books, finishing with the second specially drilled book. Screw a nut on top of the rod, twisting it into the hole until flush with the book.

Tip: For a spiral look, pivot each book a little bit as you work your way up the rod.

    5. From the bottom, screw the base plaque to the book base. Flip over and screw the tabletop to book base. Hide the screws by filling the holes with wood putty. Let dry, then sand and paint tabletop.
