Go bold and make a statement in your space by coating your items with high gloss paint. Available in every color under the sun, it adds a decidedly modern sheen to everything from architectural elements like doorframes to small décor accents like picture frames.

Choosing Your Paint
High gloss paint is available in two main varieties:
  • Oil-based: Also known as alkyd-based paint, it stands up to moisture and is therefore a great choice for exterior metals like patio furniture and mailboxes.
  • Water-based: For a majority of your indoor projects and exterior details like trim, opt for water-based paint, also known as acrylic or latex. It’s a versatile option that works well on everything from walls and woodwork to furniture and knick-knacks.
Choosing Your Color
High gloss paint reflects maximum light, so no matter the hue, you’re already adding big punch to your space. If you prefer a more neutral palette, add doses of cream, gray or black to add impact without color. And for more daring décor, choose a bold hue, but use it sparingly: a single piece of furniture, collection of knick-knacks or large frame is just enough.

Painting Your Items
If you’re working with a wooden or pre-painted piece, begin by sanding it down, then apply a base primer. Next, apply two to three coats of high gloss paint for a polished look on lots of different items, like:

  • Molding
  • Doorframes
  • Doors
  • Windowpanes
  • Staircase railings
  • Flowerboxes
Tip: The higher the gloss, the more durable the paint. A high gloss look is perfect for items prone to everyday wear and tear, since the paint can endure lots of scrubbing without losing its pretty sheen.

FurnitureTip: Since it reflects so much light, high gloss paint is not so forgiving of flaws. If your furniture features nicks, scuffs or scratches, opt for two to three coats of a dark, dramatic color, like navy blue or plum purple.

  • Mailboxes
  • Candlesticks
  • Salt & pepper shakers or grinders

Tip: Painting a series of mismatched flea market finds in a single high gloss color is a quick and easy way to bring a cohesive look and color to an empty mantel or bookshelf
