    Maritime signal flags represent individual letters of the alphabet and are used to send signals to and from ships in the ocean. With the brightly colored shapes and symbols, spell out your own message to make a simple flag banner. Incorporate it into nautical-themed décor, or make a unique sign for a party.

MATERIALS
12 20x20” cloth napkins
Painter’s tape
Triangle or straight edge ruler
Pencil
Maritime signal alphabet*
Acrylic paints, in red, blue, white, yellow and black
Art brushes, in various sizes
3/8” metal grommet kit
1 3/8” x 50’ package sisal rope
4 metal double-pronged hooks, with screws

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Use painter’s tape to make 12” squares in the center of each cloth napkin, then draw the desired symbols inside the tape squares with pencil.
2. Fill in the shapes with the corresponding paint colors, and allow it to dry. Slowly pull off the tape border.
3. Mark the four corners of the napkin approximately 1” in from each edge, then make holes through the marks with the grommet kit’s hole puncher.
4. Feed the back of the grommet through to the front of the fabric, then attach the other grommet piece on top with the kit’s setting tool.
5. String the flags in order onto the rope.
6. Hang the double-pronged hooks evenly along the wall, then hang the flag banner rope loosely from them.
