With just a little creativity, a small space can become your perfect workplace. Keep your office items organized and easily out-of-sight by repurposing an extra closet into an office space.

To get started, follow our easy tips and inspired ideas:

Prep the Closet
  • Take off the closet doors, then remove any tracking on the floor or door frame.
  • Clean the space. Be sure to wipe down walls and vacuum corners where dirt and dust may have built up.
  • Add some color! Paint the interior of the closet with hues you love, or use a pretty-patterned wallpaper. For more bright ideas, read Empower Your Home with Vibrant Colors
Design & Construct
  • If you already have a desk, make sure it fits. If not, save money by making your own with repurposed materials. Use file cabinets or short bookshelves as the base, and a door (cut to size and sanded, if necessary) as the desktop.
  • Consider the items you'll need to store in your office space. For books, install shelves. To conquer mail clutter, hang letter holders along the wall.
Decorate Your New Office
  • Mount corkboard, where you can hang inspiring photographs, to-do lists and important reminders.
  • Rather than doors, drape curtains in front of your closet office. It's easy to make them yourself: Find a fabric you love (or repurpose tablecloths) and refer to our Easy No-Sew Projects.
  • When decorating a workspace, keep it simple so you can focus. For tips, read Organized Office Décor Ideas
