Repurposed drawers are a quick, easy and inexpensive way to store everything from toys to spices. Follow our easy step-by-step instructions to create decorative, under-the-bed storage, then discover more clever ways to use old drawers.

Under-the-Bed Storage Drawers
Spruce up a worn drawer by adding a colorful new front panel, then add wheels to create a smart storage container that saves space and makes organizing easy.

Materials
Drawer
Medium density fiberboard*
Paint, color(s) of your choice
Paintbrush
2 knobs
Screwdriver
Wood screws
4 rigid casters

*Tip: Measure the front of your drawer, then take the measurements to your local home improvement store and have them cut the fiberboard to size. For a finished look, get it cut 1” bigger than your drawer on all sides.

Instructions
    1. Paint fiberboard, then let dry completely. Once dry, attach knobs to the front side.
    2. Turn your drawer over, then use a screwdriver to attach one caster to each corner.
    3. Screw the finished fiberboard to the front of the drawer. For a clean look, screw it on from the inside of the drawer.
Tip: If your drawer has a thin bottom, turn it over and use wood glue to secure a piece of 1” wide wood along the width of the drawer, then attach casters.

Other Ideas for Drawers laundry drawers
Next time you come across a piece of tattered old furniture, salvage the drawers—they’re perfect for organizing and displaying all sorts of things:

    • Hang an old drawer on any wall to create a cute shelf in seconds. For extra storage, install pieces of sturdy wood as shelves. Or line the back with hooks and hang it by the front door to catch keys and knick-knacks.
    • Make a shadow box to display all your favorite treasures, from family pictures to collectibles. For a personalized gift, fill a shadow box with little reminders of times spent with a close friend or relative.
    • Build your own bookcase: Paint 4-6 drawers the same color, then stack them vertically or horizontally in pairs to create a modular look. To steady the case, use screws to secure each drawer to the wall.
    • Add a touch of rustic style to your garden with a drawer planter. Cover the bottom with pebbles to allow for drainage, then fill it with charming, easy-to-care for plants like hens and chicks or shamrocks.
    • Show off your spice or tea collection on a drawer shelf. To add a decorative touch, line it with patterned wallpaper, decoupage it with colorful paper or use cutouts from food magazines.
