Salsa, jam, pickles and baby food—what do they have in common? They’re all packaged in glass jars. Instead of tossing these leftover containers, turn them, vintage mason jars or canning jars into space-saving home storage systems. Get started with this slideshow of not-so-ordinary organized living solutions.

Keep spools accessible and tangle-free. With a hammer and sharp nail (or drill fitted with a small bit), pierce holes in the metal lids. Next, place spools inside jars, stringing the ends through the lids before screwing them on.

Wall-Attached Organizers

Turn empty wall space into storage for craft supplies and beyond! Screw wooden embroidery hoops that will snugly fit around your jars to the wall, then secure jars inside the hoops.

Labeled Lids

Re-label jars as needed by coating the lids with chalkboard paint, then use chalk to write what’s inside. It’s our top pick for sorting small items in disorganized drawers. Chalkboard paint can also be used to create labels on the sides of jars.

Store supplies and ingredients you use often out in the open. Adhere extra-strong magnets to the bottoms of baby or other small jars, then cover lids with stickers or chalkboard paint. Hang the finished jars on a magnetic strip.

Under-the-Shelf Storage

Turn the unused area beneath pantry shelves into extra storage space. Screw lids to the underside of the shelves, then twist jars into respective lids. For something stylish and easy-to-alter, thread twine through tags, then tie around jars.

Make a moveable system by stacking jars on their sides and adhering them together with hot glue. Slide office supplies and other go-to tools in the slots.
