Make the most of limited space with a smart, vertically designed workspace that practically disappears when your work is done. Find out what common materials can be used to build this practical home office, plus get tips for keeping it mess-free.

Building a Cabinet Office
Repurpose everyday items to create a workspace without breaking your budget. Here’s how to use a few things you might already own. For materials you don’t have, look for deals at thrift stores or garage sales.

    • Cabinet: Turn a former wood cabinet or wardrobe into an office nook! If it has doors, remove them, then take out any shelves. For a decorative touch, paint the interior a solid color or cover it in patterned wallpaper.
    • Coffee Table: Make your desktop with an old coffee table. Remove the legs and paint the tabletop to match your shelves or cubbies. For simple storage, install it with hinges so that it’s easy to pull down when you need it or put away when you don’t.
    • Shelves: Use shelves to create extra storage space. Give the old shelves a fresh coat of paint, then install them above the desk. Or purchase inexpensive wood panels at your local hardware store, refresh them with a little color, then hang them to create custom cubbies.
Once you finish the interior of your office, re-install the cabinet doors so you can close off the space when it’s not in use.

    Organizing a Small Workspace
Use these unexpected organizers to keep your office in perfect order.

      • Shoeboxes: Store stationery, photos and miscellaneous supplies, like chargers or batteries, in old shoeboxes. Cover them with wrapping paper or wallpaper, then add decorative labels.
      • Mason Jars: Display pens, pencils, paper clips, push pins and other small office supplies in clear mason jars. For a sleek look, use jars of the same size, then arrange them in a straight line. To create a carefree feel, cluster together different-sized jars.
      • Cork Board: To create your own customized bulletin board, line the back of your cabinet doors or part of the interior with cork board, then hang important documents, a calendar and inspirational images or quotes on it.
