Creative Caramel Apples

    Pair apples with creamy, melted caramel to create delectable sweet treats that can be enjoyed any time of year. And, they make perfect party favors, desserts or gifts for teachers on the first day of school.

Creative Caramel Apples

Serves 6
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 5 minutes
Refrigeration time: 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS
Butter, to grease baking sheet
Toppings*
6 apples**
Wood skewers or craft sticks
1 bag (14 ounces) caramel candy
2 tablespoons milk

*Tip: Try chocolate chips, sprinkles, nuts, chopped or crushed candy, granola and dried fruit.

**Tip: Use small, firm, tart apples like Granny Smith, Lady, McIntosh, Fuji, Gala or Golden Delicious. Avoid Red Delicious because they lack the inner firmness needed.

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Grease a baking sheet with butter, or line with aluminum foil, and place toppings in individual dishes.
  2. Remove stems from apples, then wash and dry them. Insert wooden skewers or craft sticks into the tops of the apples.
  3. Melt caramel in a saucepan on low heat, and stir in milk. Simmer until it becomes a smooth liquid.
  4. Quickly dip apples in the caramel to coat, then immediately roll in desired toppings. If the caramel hardens, add another tablespoon of milk, then simmer again until liquefied.
  5. Place apples on a baking sheet, and refrigerate to cool before eating, about 15 minutes.

Tip: Store-bought apples usually have a wax coating on them. Quickly dip them in boiling water to remove it, then refrigerate until you’re ready to use.
