Pressing flowers is a simple way to preserve the beauty of blooms, even those you grow in your own yard. Pick and press your flowers, then use them to create one-of-a-kind coasters.

  1. Pick your flowers. Whether you pick blossoms from your own garden or purchase them, gather fully bloomed flowers the day you want to press them. Flat-petaled pansies and daisies work well, as do baby’s breath, lavendar and mint leaves. If you cut them from your garden, do so on a dry day.
  2. Press your flowers. Grab a large, heavy book and cut sheets cardboard, newspaper and tissues slightly smaller than the book. Layer cardboard, newspaper and tissue—in that order—then spread your flowers on the tissue, being sure none of the blooms are touching. Cover with another layer of tissue, newspaper and cardboard. Continue building in this order, then top with the heavy book and a brick or set of canned goods. Press for 2-4 weeks, until flowers are flat.
  3. Make coasters. Arrange pressed flowers on a clean, tile-sized glass pane. Top with another pane, lining up the edges. Peel off the backing from a strip of aluminum foil tape and lay it glue-side-up on your work surface. Holding your coaster together tightly, carefully line up one corner of it with the tape, then press the foil against the side of the coaster. Repeat until you’ve covered all four sides. Press the foil to make a tight seal around the coaster, then trim off excess foil. Continue until your coaster set is complete and while you’re at it, make extras to give as hostess and thank you gifts!
Tip: Coaster’s aren’t the only thing you can create with pressed flowers! Try decorating homemade stationery with them or use them to make simple sun prints for framing.
