Visit thrift stores or book resale shops to find unique, old books, then turn them into a creative way for displaying your favorite photos. Whether hung on the wall or propped up on an end table, these rustic frames will get your guests talking.

Repurposed Book Frame

The older the book, the more rustic your frame will look! And they make unique gifts for family members and special occasions—grandparents, birthdays, graduations, weddings, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day.

MATERIALS
Hardcover book
Photo
Pencil
Utility knife
Chisel or putty knife
Ruler
Tacky craft glue
Binder clips
Masking tape

Tip: Some children’s books have shapes cut out of the front cover as part of the story. Skip the following steps, paint the book, and tuck a picture behind the ready-made frame!

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Pull out the book’s pages, leaving the spine, front and back cover intact.*
  2. With a pencil, trace the border of your photo on the inside of the back cover.
  3. Lightly cut over the traced lines with the utility knife, but do not cut all the way through, keeping the book cloth uncut.
  4. Use the chisel to pull away the layers of book board from the cover until it’s thin.
  5. Draw a new photo outline with your pencil, approximately 1/4” in from the first border, then cut it out, poking through the cover.
  6. Cut a diagonal slit in each corner, then glue and fold the excess 1/4” book board sections over, toward the inside of the book. Attach binder clips to hold the tabs in place and allow them to dry.
  7. Attach the photo edges to the inside of the cover with tape.

*Tip: This step is optional. If you’re going to hang the book flat against the wall, it’s best to remove the pages. If you leave the pages intact, the book can prop up on a table.
