Dim the lights and set your home aglow! From glass to paper to fabric, you can give just about any material a lustrous look with glow-in-the-dark paint. First, get tips for using it, then craft glowing décor for Halloween and beyond with our 8 easy ideas.

Glow-in-the-Dark Paint Tips
Whatever the project, follow a few general rules of thumb:

  • Pick the right paint. Look for an array of glow-in-the-dark paints at craft and home improvement stores or online. The type you’ll need depends on your base; find suggestions for different surfaces below, and read labels for recommended uses, too.

Tip: Glow-in-the-dark paints labeled “daytime” typically dry clear, only revealing their color in the dark, whereas opaque paints dry as solid colors.

  • Prime before, seal after. For a brighter glow, first apply white primer or paint to your surface. And finish projects with spray sealant; it acts as a protective layer, prolonging the life of the glow-in-the-dark effect.
  • Recharge regularly. Most glow-in-the-dark finishes will last for years to come, as long as you recharge them. Simply expose to bright natural or artificial light for at least 30 minutes.

Glow-in-the-Dark Crafts: Halloween
You can give just about anything an eerie look for the holiday:

  • Pumpkins: First, wipe fresh or faux pumpkins clean. Then, in a well-ventilated area or outside, spray them with glow-in-the-dark spray paint. Let dry for 5-10 minutes before repeating. Finish with spray sealant.

Tip: Tape a stencil to the pumpkin, then paint inside the lines to create glowing designs. For details that stay dark as the rest of the pumpkin glows, draw shapes (polka dots, jack-o-lantern faces, anything!) onto vinyl tape. Cut out and press to pumpkin before painting.

Glow-in-the-Dark Crafts: Year-Round
Keep your home aglow throughout the seasons:

  • Glowing Glassware: For instant mood lighting, splatter the insides of glass vessels with glow-in-the-dark latex paint.

  • Cosmic Décor: Paint playful glow-in-the-dark designs on the walls of kids rooms, or create starscapes on any ceiling.

Tip: To craft authentic constellations, dip a round brush into glow-in-the-dark paint, blot off excess, press straight down on the surface, then lift. As the bristles spread, they form one-of-a-kind stars.

  • Glow-in-the-Dark CraftsGlow-in-the-Dark Mobiles: Coat the hanging objects with glow-in-the-dark paint for spinning mobiles that twinkle by night.
  • Bright Butterflies: Brush paper butterflies with a layer of daytime acrylic glow-in-the-dark paint and they’ll stay aflutter long after the sun goes down.
  • Nighttime Timekeeper: Trace the numbers and hands of a clock with glow-in-the-dark acrylic or puffy paint so you can read the time at any hour.
