Who needs rubber stamps and inkpads when fun, seasonal stamp possibilities are sitting right in your refrigerator or pantry? Slice apples and potatoes in half, dip them in paint and you have instant stamps for a family-friendly fall craft. We’ll give you suggestions on how to liven up fabric, personalize stationery or make your own wrapping paper!

Fruit and Veggie Stamps

Materials
Potatoes or apples
Newspaper
Poster or fabric paint
Container for paint*
Sharp knife
Items to stamp

*Tip: Use old jar lids, paper plates, pie tins or paper bowls.

Instructions
  1. Rinse the fruit or vegetables to remove any loose dirt. Pat dry and slice in half to make a clean, flat cut.
  2. Cover your workspace with newspaper to catch paint drips or spills.
  3. Using a cookie cutter, press into the flat end of the fruit or veggie to make an indentation, then carve around it with a sharp knife, leaving a raised shape with the edges carved away. You can also freehand it, or draw a shape with a marker, then carve.

Tip: To avoid any accidents if a slip occurs, cut down into the fruit or vegetable, then away from your body instead of toward.

  1. Blot with a paper towel to remove excess moisture, and dip into the paint. You’re ready to stamp away! If you want to use a new color on the stamp, simply rinse off the paint and pat dry.

Tip: You can get beautiful stamp impressions from apples without carving shapes into them! Cut one apple in half down through the stem, and another one straight through the middle. Let the paint do the rest of the work.
